Abstract

This study discusses the development of digital writing assistants to improve and assess the writing skill of individuals learning Turkish as a foreign language, and the use of such software applications for writing skill. This discussion takes place through the examination of various features of different digital writing assistants used especially for English as a foreign language writing skill. In this study, which is design-based research, the data were collected via document analysis. During the data collection process, various digital writing assistants currently in use for English are examined and their characteristics are specified. Then, a framework is presented regarding the needs such a software application can address, how it can be used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language, and the features it should have. The study also discusses that the cooperation of Turkish language teachers, those who teach and learn Turkish as a foreign language, software development and educational material development experts, as well as all other stakeholders, is critical for teaching Turkish as a foreign language and ultimately for the development of such a digital assistant.
