Yabancılara Türkçe Öğretmek Amacıyla Yazılmış “Grammar of the Turkish Language” (1709) ile “A Simple Transliteral Grammar of the Turkish Language with Dialogues and Vocabulary” (1877) Adlı Kitapların İçerdikleri Söz Varlığının Karşılaştırılması

Abstract

The vocabulary a language has is a significant element for those who communicate or produce works in the fields of science, art, etc. with that language. This is because languages are classified as having high or weak communication skills according to their vocabulary. Since the ancient times, many people have produced, and are still producing, works to teach their native language or a language they speak to their own nation as well as other nations. Although these works have tried to teach language with different methods over the years, vocabulary, a common point, has always appeared as one of the essential elements to be taught. In this study, the vocabularies in two grammar books were compared: one is Grammar of the Turkish Language written by Thomas Vaughan at the beginning of 18th century and the other one is A Simple Transliteral Grammar of The Turkish Language with Dialogues and Vocabulary written by Edwin Arnold at the end of 19th century. In the last part of Grammar of the Turkish Language, the vocabulary within the dictionary, which was written for those who read and learned Turkish from the book, and the vocabulary in the dictionary part of A Simple Transliteral Grammar of The Turkish Language with Dialogues and Vocabulary were compared in accordance with various variables. The method used in the study was document analysis method. Considering the results obtained, it is seen that both authors gave examples in line with the language needs of their period.
