Abstract

This study aims to examine the anxiety of foreign students about participating in activities in the target language. The study is phenomenological and is conducted following the qualitative research method. The study employs semi-structured interview forms to get the students’ opinions who are chosen through a convenient sampling method. To analyze the data, the study uses content analysis. As a result of the study, it is clear that the majority of foreign students participate in social activities in the target language voluntarily or with the encouragement of instructors. It is also clear that the majority of these students participating in the study are extremely anxious before taking a part in social activities in the target language. Moreover, the results show that these students are not very anxious during social activities. The data in the code “because they were afraid” are from the anxious students. However, their anxiety goes away after taking a part in social activities and no student is anxious anymore.
